Saravanaa, The Saviour

We knew about southern India’s influence in Malaysia since Batu Caves was on our itinerary. It came as a pleasant surprise when, peeking out of the window, I saw Saravanaa Bhawan just across the road from our hotel. Saravanaa Bhawan is a famous franchise chain of primarily South Indian delicacies.

On day one of our trip, we weren’t aware of how many blessings this establishment would receive from us. After struggles of finding reliable vegetarian food starting the night of our arrival, we were happy to have it at a stone’s throw distance from our accommodation, would be an understatement. I was extremely elated since I have always been a fan of South-Indian cuisine. It became our instant go-to and one-stop solution for all subsequent breakfasts in KL. Being a pure vegetarian restaurant, ordering anything off the menu was a luxury we wouldn’t find anywhere else.

Starting from the morning of Batu Caves to the day of Genting Highlands, Saravanaa became our trust-worthy stop for breakfasts. Two days of consecutive breakfasts and P already knew without asking what I would like to have. A plate of idli or medu vada served with sambhar and two chutneys. Even in foreign land, starting the day with bites of Indian taste reminded us of last year’s Kerala Trip. Besides the Indian tourists like us, many regulars could been seen enjoying their first meal of the day before heading out for work.

One evening for dinner, we gave their North Indian dishes a try when we weren’t in the mood for exploring and experimenting with new restaurants. However, the taste didn’t quite match the authenticity of homemade dal and instantly left us longing for home.

It would be surprising to know that I had only visited this outlet twice at Connaught Place, even after years of residing in NCR. Going through the description leaflet of this outlet in KL, we came to know it was available in multiple locations around KL. It even has outlets in Europe, USA, Middle East and Australia! I gave P a smirk, pointing at the location of its franchises, hinting at our future vacations.

For the part it played in our stories of Malaysia, we joked about it, giving it the title of saviour for us.
