Alice came near her mother and sat down on the bed next to the treasure box. Her mother, Mary, continued to speak.
“Once upon a time, all over the world, the right of ruling the kingdom was only restricted for the Prince of the house. But things changed when centuries ago, King Richard II had no heir. He had been married to Queen Rayne, who was gifted with Phoenix Love. He loved her so much that he refused the proposals from all over the world. Even the most beautiful princess couldn’t win over him. Even the possibility of having a heir couldn’t lure him into matrimony with any of them. Touched by the purity of his love, Cupid granted him a gift, the gift of heir, as both husband and wife had wished. But Queen always wanted a Princess, blinded by her love the King asked Cupid for a beautiful daughter.
Few months later, the couple was blessed with a daughter. They named her Elysia. The celebration of this new happiness went on for days in his kingdom. While both King and Queen were busy showering the love on their child, the Elders of the kingdom were worried over the future of the kingdom with no heir in sight. Some suggested the King to ask Cupid for another child. Some suggested him to adopt a boy secretly. But he refused everything whatsoever. He said that his daughter would take over his kingdom but the decision didn’t go quite well with the Governing Committee also known as the Elders. This had never happened before in the history. A few disloyal planned to kill the King and then the Princess before she turned twenty-five, the lawful age of becoming a King or a Queen. Just a day before her twenty-fifth birthday when she would be crowned as the Ruler of the Kingdom, she overheard the conspiracy against her being planned by her Uncle and Aunt. She knew that his father was on his deathbed and won’t survive the coming winter.
The plan went quite well as they succeeded in putting the King to permanent sleep and he never woke up to wish her Princess on her birthday and gift her his Kingdom. Burying the grief, both the Queen and the Princess, dressed in the royal shade of blue, were present at the ceremony. The decoration had been toned down and the celebration had been postponed but the duties couldn’t be shied away from. This ceremony was defying quite a many laws but the mother and daughter stood their decision. Just a few seconds before the Queen, on the behalf of her husband, could crown her daughter, the Princess was shot down with the poisonous arrow. The Queen understood what lay ahead. Before she could be attacked she stabbed herself with her secret phoenix sword. She was instantly burned into ashes. It caused mayhem in the Grand Hall and everyone rushed to save the Queen. In this chaos no one observed that the Princess had regained her breaths and the ashes have vanished to turn into a Navy Blue round gemstone. Princess Elysia claimed the crown and the kingdom. The legend goes that Blue stone was later embedded into the ring that’s now passed down along with the crown.”
Alice stared her mom in disbelief. Mary opened the box and took out the ceremonial crown and the Ring that she had taken off last night.
“But, the legend doesn’t end here. There’s curse attached to the ring”, Mary spoke, tears threatening to escape.
“What curse?” The word curse made Alice uneasy.
“The Uncle who couldn’t bear the sacrifice of the Queen and cursed every bearer of the said ring. He said whenever the successor of the King will be a Princess, the Queen will die. This is called the Phoenix Blue Curse, as the Queen symbolically go on to live in the next Queen.” Mary had a far away look in her eyes as she said this.
“WHAT!!” shrieked Alice as she stood up and the Crown and the Ring fell on the floor.
“I’m not going to take it then”, she declared.
“You don’t own that choice. It’s the destiny that was sealed when you took birth”, Mary sighed as she said this.
“But there must be some loophole. Why nobody discovered it yet!” Alice was not ready to accept what Fate had written in her future. To imagine her life without her mother was unfathomable to her.
“There isn’t any that I know of”, Mary lied as she walked out of the room for the ceremony.

Theme this month: A story A week
There are something ascribed at birth but guess the person is in a catch 22 situation in life. Very well narrated and the theory conspiracy has been handled in a sensitive and deft manner.
So there is a loophole… Gripping tale 🙂
Very well told!
Most excellent. Can’t wait for the next installment.
But why did the Queen mother lie about the loophole’s non-existence? 🙁
