Arriving Late #AtoZChallenge

She quickly slid her hands into those red bangles whose shade matched exactly with the shade of her almost red saree. Applying some Kohl under her eyes and a perfect shade of red on her lips, she added colors to her beauty. After putting a bindi on her forehead and a little stroke of vermilion completed her look. She continued to admire herself in the mirror for the next ten minutes.Flashes from her wedding day two years ago came back to her. She had looked like pretty much the same at that time. But today will be different, she thought. Today will be finally the day of her dreams and the night of her imagination. Today she will be his and he will be hers, today they will be together, finally.

When he had left for the border just the day next to their wedding, she was left alone. But everything changed for her when the war ended but her husband didn’t return. She was a wife to an unknown husband. Her identity was lost. It was only after six months full of wait, hope, loneliness and despair that she decided to do something with her life. She moved out of her town to a bigger city and found herself a job at a school. Though she had tried to move on but her in-laws never shied away from reminding her of her lost husband, their lost and only son.

Life hasn’t been a bed of roses for her since the day of her marriage but todaythe love would return in her life. Her husband, her lost hope of happiness will now be back. Life would be, what people called, normal.

Similar thoughts continued to rule her mind throughout the morning and then the afternoon. She had called his parents to ask about his favorite cuisines but what she received was only abuse and sarcasm. Trying her best, she prepared all that she could. Way to a man’s heart is through his stomach, she has heard.

While she was still giving her dishes one last finishing touch, the door bell rang. He’s here, with a big smile touching her lips, she ran towards the door. She opened the door as shyness in her eyes soon took over her whole body.

There he was. Standing tall and dark in pale blue shirt and navy blue denim. Here he was.. Key to her happiness or so she thought!
