A Day In The Life Of A Cricket Lover

Being a cricket crazy country where everyone bleeds blue, one might think that a cricket fan will get uninterrupted cricket time. But what is a day like in a cricket fan’s life in India? Here’s a glimpse.
I sat back on the couch and turned on the TV. My favourite cricket match was just about to start in a few minutes.
“Di!!!! Di???”, called out V, my sister. I instantly knew that my idea of a perfect holiday watching cricket whole day was soon to be ruined.
” Yes? ” I answered back without budging from my seat. India has won the toss and has decided to let the opponent bat first.
As I didn’t pay attention to her repeated calls, V entered the room and stood in front of me, blocking the TV screen.
“V please get aside, you are blocking the view”, I said.
“No”
“Why??” I could feel irritation.
” Because you have to go shopping with me. You promised. Remember?? ”
“But it’s the circket match V, may be some other day please”
“But you promised!”
After minutes of counter-persuasion, I gave in. I had to! After all, this sister-shopping trip was long due.
“OK, go and get ready fast!”
“Don’t worry Di, we will be back before India comes to bat!” She teased.
Shopping is said to cheer up any girl’s mood, but my heart and soul was still in the match which I was unable to watch. *Sigh* But I wasn’t the one to let go easily! All the time when V went to try out the dresses, I would quickly fish out my mobile to keep myself updated about the score. Good bless the souls who created internet.
After more than three hours later we came back home loaded with my darling sister’s shopping bags. Did you really think I could shop something for myself when my only concern was whether India was taking timely wickets of the opponent’s team or not! Impossible! As soon as I reached home, I switched on TV before anyone else could call me for anything else. I could catch only last few overs to watch. Still, India’s inning was left, I thought and smiled to myself.
“N, your phone! T is on the call, shouted Mom from the other room. I cursed her for calling at the wrong moment. I picked up though.
Her parents were out of town and she wanted my help in something so was calling me over. Obviously, I denied at first. It had been days we have met. So after a few mental calculations, I agreed. I told her that I will be there in an hour. Meanwhile, the first inning was over. I thought I would watch the rest of the match at her home with no frequent calls for household chores. It was a blessing in disguise, I thought
But surely fate had different plans. When I reached home, she broke the news to me that her TV was gone for repair. Great!! What now?? What was thinking?? About the match of course, my inner voice replied. I decided to tune in to the radio. That was my saviour at that moment. Yes, I accept that I could hear her complaining but it’s about cricket!!
In the evening when I came back, I had thought I would lock myself in the room to watch at least the last few winning strokes peacefully. But that was not how it was to be. Mom informed me that some guests were due at the dinner today so I was required in the kitchen. (De)merits of being the elder one. Cooking together is fun but today was a different story. I picked up my phone and logged into the fast UC browser. UC Cricket, a dedicated space for cricket, gave me live updates about the match. I could easily help mom in the kitchen without missing out in any updates. Phew!!

India won the match and I won the day, spending time with everyone who needed me without sacrificing on the match. A win-win situation. Yayie!!

Thank You UC Browser in helping me to bring out the Cricket Fan’s hidden life.

  1. This whole process of getting cricket updates on your mobile while you are on the go seems so surreal when you think about where we were in the year 2000; Still dependent on the tv or a very slow dial up connection for any such info 🙂

  2. Ohh I have lost interest in cricket these days..Only something like the world cup or an India Pakistan match can get me cheering else I usually don’t watch any ! sigh!

  3. Too funny! 😉 Thank goodness for technology though! 😉 I can so relate as I used to be an ice skating fan fanatic watching countless shows – hours and hours of this – wishing to be uninterrupted, living my life during commercials and before and after the shows! 😉 So I hear you on this one ‘sister!’ 😉 <3
