(R)eturn Of Love #AtoZChallenge

They both stared at the skyline and city beneath them, both each lost in different set of their own thoughts. Sitting at the terrace so high up in the air, she wasn’t scared of falling from that height anymore; for she had already fallen from where there was no return. She called it a trap, what people usually called love. She looked at him, who was staring into oblivion. Her hand inched forward to hold his but came no response whatsoever. She was hurt. She wondered her worth in his life and only questions bombarded her head while her heart ached. For this moment, she knew she had lost him yet again. It was nothing new in that. She had now stop trying to understand what words of hers or which actions of hers triggered which old memories for him.

“Do I matter?” She asked as she took back her hand.

“Yes ofcourse, what makes you doubt it?” he replied, turning to face her. He could see the hurt in her eyes which she always tried to hide.

“Nothing, just wondering if you’ll ever be mine….”, her voice trailed off for she wouldn’t be able to hide the lump in her throat if she spoke any further.
“I’m”, he replied.
“Hmm”, came the reply as she looked away hiding away her eyes from him. “Akash, why do I feel like you are.. you are still..”, she couldn’t bring herself to say it. Few moments of silence followed.

“I’ll wait”, she said suddenly after some painful moments of silence.
“What?” he looked at blankly.

“I’ll wait until when you can be just mine, until you’ve let her go completely. You know I can’t share you with anyone…. not even with her memories… I am not asking you to erase her from your existence but I hope you understand what I mean..” she said.

“It is nothing like that Anika. Tell me how do I prove my love”, he tried to protest in vain. Even he knew what she meant to say and he couldn’t deny it either. Though he had put his past behind him, it still came back to haunt them once in a while. It was hurting them both, but he knew, it was hurting her more than it was hurting him.
“Love is not to be proved. It can only be felt”, came the stoic reply.

Another set of moments passed, hurting them both with equal intensity.

“I can’t take this forward”, she spoke with determination.
He looked at her in disbelief.
“This half-relationship, I mean. I can’t. I am ready to wait but not like this. I am ready heal you but not at the cost of hurting myself. I am ready to mend the broken pieces of your heart but not breaking mine at the each moment. I want to walk this path with you but not to return back alone. I will prefer to be a nothing in your life than be just a rebound”, she spoke gently as she got up to leave.

“You are not the one”, he said it in reflex, getting up himself, “instead you are the return of love in my life”, he said holding her hand and pulling her into his warm embrace.

There is no one who hadn’t known love. We all have been touched by it at some point or the other. So this April I will take you through the little snippets of love that will warm your heart, touch your soul and might moist your eyes. Stay tuned and watch love unfold daily in new ways.
