The (P)retence #AtoZChallenge

The phone had been ringing for quite some time now. He finally gave in and picked up at the fourth call.
“What are you hiding?” she said, he could see her mischievous smile on the other side of the line.
“Nothing”, he lied nonchalantly, wondering how could she possibly know being so afar.
“Tell me. Stop lying”, she demanded.
“There’s nothing to share”, he lied again.
“Umm.. okay.. your wish”, she sounded dejected.
“Why do you think there is something?” he asked, curious now.
“Just felt like there’s something…”, her voice trailed off as she thought of her observations.
“Oh.. if there’s something, you’ll know”, he smiled, thinking of what he had in mind.
After fifteen minutes when the call got over, he was still wondering how could she possibly guess the things right on time. He never really understood that about her. It was a mystery he could never solve, he thought, getting back to the work at hand.
A week passed by, but none of days would she not ask him if there was something she should know and he kept lying again and again. It was getting harder for him to convince her otherwise now. After all, he wasn’t used to keeping things from her. That just did not feel right.
She was restlessly roaming around in the house in her fuchsia pink top and blue shorts.
“What happened to you? ” asked her flatmate watching her pace in the room for an hour now.
“Don’t know, just feeling a bit restless”, she said as she finally sat down on the couch with tub of icecream in her hand.
The bell rung and she almost jumped up to see who it was. It was weekend and all the maids have already come and gone finishing the day’s job. As she opened the door she couldn’t believe her eyes. She stood there stunned, thinking it to be a dream. She only came to her senses when he came forward and hugged her, whispering in her ears , “Surprise!”.
After the initial moments of disbelief had subsided down, she asked crossing her hands, “So, this is what you were hiding, eh?”
“Yes and No”, he said sheepishly as he pulled out a gift-wrapped package, something he had been busy with for the past few days. “I made this for you.”
